NYAMEKA KwaLunga Mabandla burst into tears during a court session after it was revealed that inkabi was supposed to kill her together with her husband.

This was revealed during the court appearance of Mziyanda Mdlungu, who was arrested in Katlehong, Gauteng last week in connection with the murder of Cape Town activist, Loyiso Mabandla-Nkohla on 17 April 2023.

Mdlungu appeared in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Monday, 20 November 2023.

“The meeting that was convened by Mr Thobani Maxengana took place before the 17 April shooting and was attended by the accused before this court and accused number one on the charge sheet.

“The accused people agreed with Mr Maxengana that they would kill the deceased. The second target was the wife of the late Mr Loyiso Mabandla and she is Mrs Nyameka Mabandla. She was supposed to be shot and killed,” said the prosecutor.

Nyameka, who was sitting next to Loyiso’s friend Masizole Mnqasela, broke into tears after the revelations. After the court proceedings, Nyameka said she was shocked by the revelations.

“Hearing the fact that I was supposed to also die that day, I will only think about my children because they are very young. I’m struggling to process that I could have died that day. If Loyiso had not said to me ‘stand back’. He said to me ‘I know you don’t like to listen to me but just today listen to me as your husband and turn back’. I reluctantly turned back,” said Nyameka.

She said the story of Loyiso’s death was one of betrayal because so far, the alleged mastermind who died in holding cells was Loyiso’s homeboy. She also said she knew Mdlungu. She said Maxengana and Mdlungu also visited Loyiso’s house after he lost his mother three weeks before he was also killed.

“The mastermind comes from Loyiso’s town village in Eastern Cape. He grew up in the same village town as Loyiso. This is someone who approached Loyiso because he was struggling. He was trying to resuscitate his business and for him to turn and want to kill both of us and to kill Loyiso is the most disgusting thing I have ever experienced,” said Nyameka.
