COSAS is looking for private schools that are operating in spite of the call by government to delay the reopening to next month.
On Monday, Cosas members protested outside Charterhouse Private School in Roodepoort, west of Joburg, after it was found that it had allegedly resumed the 2021 academic year.
Gauteng Cosas organiser Musa Shabangu told Daily Sun that their comrades were looking for more schools that were operating illegally.
“Cosas is in support of the ANC Youth League, and we came to the school because it was not adhering to government regulations.”
Shabangu said the congress thought it important to demonstrate and shut down the school.

“We believe we’re under one government in the country.
“For us to picket at Charterhouse this morning was to say we can’t promote inequality.”
Cosas also raised concerns about the difference in reopening dates as private schools were given the green light to open on 1 February, while public schools were to only open 14 days later.
Shabangu said its stance was that no school should open or operate before 15 February.
He said the demonstration was not a one-time thing as the congress didn’t want the future of young people to be at risk because of selfish private schools, owned by people who only cared about money. Gauteng education spokesman Steve Mabona said the department found that the school was only operating the Early Child Development Centre that catered for younger kids.
“Parents who wanted to drop off their kids at the school were barred from doing so.
“The department has been pleading with all independent and private schools to adhere to the call for the delay,” he told the People’s Paper.
