Cops shut down 30 fong kong shebeens

THE long weekend led to the arrest of almost 1 700 suspects across Gauteng for various offences.

Police commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela led operation O Kae Molao.

The multi-disciplinary operation was also joined by Tracker and Fidelity private security. Tracker helped the police with advanced technological equipment at the roadblocks to detect stolen and hijacked vehicles, while Fidelity sent one of its helicopters and a drone to help the police on the ground.

More arrests were for drunk driving and at least 30 illegal shebeens were shut down and tons of liquor was seized.

In the Joburg district, more than 500 suspects were bust; 462 in Ekurhuleni district; 198 in Sedibeng, while 188 were bust in the West Rand. Those who were arrested in the West Rand were bust for offences including rape, murder, as well as attempted murder.

In Tshwane, more than 300 suspects were bust for various crimes.

Mawela said: “We will continue with operation O Kae Molao. I’m glad that we have happy boots on the ground as our multi-disciplinary forces achieve commendable successes.”

The arrested suspects are expected to appear in various magistrates courts within the province.
