THE deputy minister of social development, Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, has urged women to “close their legs when drunk or condomise”

She warned the country to pray that she’s never appointed minister of social development because hell will break loose during this time of the year.

Bogopane-Zulu was speaking at Khotsong Women Hostel in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni on Monday, 12 December.

She was addressing women and girls about the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide, coupled with the Anti-Substance Abuse campaign, as part of the Festive Season initiative.

Bogopane-Zulu has described women who fell pregnant under the influence of alcohol a “nuisance” at Sassa offices because they “forgot” to condomise.

She said some incidents of sexually transmitted diseases could have been avoided, including the spread of HIV/Aids.

“Government spend R500 billion on ARVs. The money is enough to build houses,” said Bogopane-Zulu.

She expressed great dislike for the festive season.

“I hate the month of December,” she said.

“This month is a problem for me because I can’t even go on leave. People get drunk, die in accidents and some mothers even forget to buy school uniforms for their children and pay school fees as they spent all the money on alcohol,” said Bogopane-Zulu.

“You better pray I don’t become minister of social development. You don’t want know what changes I will make this time of the month,” she warned.

She further educated pregnant women about fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS).

Bogopane-Zulu said she often hides behind a casual look and a cap, and scout taverns to observe the drinking behaviour.

“Women have become drunkards. Taverns are packed by women. Where are the children when mothers are drinking at taverns. If you don’t want to let go of alcohol, then get sterilization. It’s for free.”

I beg you, can we be alive in January, please,” added the deputy minister.
