accreditation

POLICE have arrested a man carrying 4kg of cocaine at Cape Town International Airport.

The provincial organised narcotics unit received a tip-off about a passenger trafficking cocaine through the airport.

“The members were strategically placed to profile and search passengers disembarking from an international flight from Dubai just before midday on Tuesday, 4 October,” said Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi.

“They conducted intensive searches and their mandate was fulfilled when they confiscated 4kg, covered in chocolate wrappings hidden in the luggage of one of the passengers,” he added.

“A 37-year-old man was arrested and detained on a charge of dealing in drugs.”

The cocaine is said to worth about R2,4 million. Swartbooi said once charged, the suspect would appear in the Bellville Magistrates Court.

In February, a 28-year-old woman travelling from Brazil was also bust with heroin worth R870 000 in Cape Town. She was intercepted by the Hawks’ narcotics enforcement bureau.

Then in August, a joint operation between the Hawks, the SAPS crime intelligence and the Western Cape traffic department bust three men transporting a cocaine consignment, estimated to be worth R400 million.
