FOUR police officers in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni have been arrested for assault.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokeswoman Lizzy Suping said they arrested four members of the Boksburg North Visible Policing for the assault and torture of a foreigner in Boksburg North on 9 January.

She said the victim together with his friends were approached by the cops who demanded to see their IDs.

“When the victim could not produce an original copy of the document, he was taken to the police station where he was allegedly assaulted and tortured by the officers. The victim was taken to hospital for medical attention where he was in a coma for nine days,” she said.

Suping said the four officers, a sergeant and three constables, face charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and defeating the ends of justice.

She said they were arrested at their place of work and will be detained at Boksburg cop shop.

“They will appear in the Boksburg Magistrates Court on Thursday, 2 February,” she said.
