CRIME in Mzansi seems to be worsening by the day, and not even cops are spared.

A cop was at his home with his girlfriend and a friend when they were gunned down before being robbed of their cellphones.

It is alleged that two gunmen stormed into Sergeant Wonderboy Tshangwe's house at Quarry Heights, Durban, on Saturday night, 26 August.

He was with his girlfriend and a friend seated in the lounge of his house when two unknown suspects stormed into the house and demanded money and a firearm from Wonderboy.

The suspects took Wonderboy to his bedroom, where he was shot five times on the left side of his upper body and stomach.

Following his brutal murder, the suspects took three cellphones.

One cellphone belonged to Wonderboy, and the other to his girlfriend and friend.

The suspects fled on foot in an unknown direction.

A resident said she was watching TV when she heard the gunshots.

"I quickly went underneath my bed because the gunshots were very loud. After the gunshots, I heard residents talking outside and went to see them. I was hurt that my cop neighbour had been shot dead. The suspects wanted his gun," she said.

She said Wonderboy lived with his girlfriend in the rented house, and he was from Nongoma.

Another resident said he also suspects that the suspects were targeting Wonderboy because they wanted his gun.

KZN police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda said police were investigating murder and armed robbery after a police sergeant stationed at the Phoenix Police Station was shot and fatally wounded at his Quarry Heights home.

"Information at this stage indicates that the officer, his girlfriend and another male friend were seated inside the house when two armed men barged in and demanded money and his firearm. The officer was forced into his bedroom where he was shot multiple times," he said.

"Suspects allegedly robbed the victims of their three cellphones before fleeing the scene. The officer's firearm was not taken."
