THE community of Temba in Hammanskraal, Tshwane, is concerned about the safety of pupils and teachers at Sekampaneng Primary School.

This is because some classroom walls collapsed last year and residents are worried more might collapse again.

On top of that, some of the classrooms are flooded by water.

School governing body (SGB) chairman Motlogelwa Matjila (42) said: "We saw it proper to stop pupils from coming to school because they cannot focus with water in the classrooms."

He said the school is not safe anymore as the kids could get sick from the dirty water.

Matjila said that nothing was done about the collapsed classrooms.

"We are pleading for better classrooms," he said.

Concerned parent Petrus Sithole (44) said they are tired of talking about the dangers at the school.

"We have been protesting for almost two years and nothing has been done. Our pleas fell on deaf ears," he said.

"The education department is not taking us seriously. We are worried about the future of our children. Some are still sitting at home because of the school’s bad condition," he said.

Petrus said they would rather have containers while the problem is being resolved.

Another concerned, parent David Sebothoma (45), said: "The department has failed us. We need them to tell us when the project to fix the school is starting."

Gauteng education spokesman Steve Mabona said the department is aware of infrastructure challenges at the school.

"We sent a team of structural engineers to the school for assessment. We will deliver mobile units for pupils to use while working on fixing the school," he said.
