SECURITY officers at the City of Joburg have decried exploitation, poor working conditions, intimidation and being undermined by senior executives.

They claimed they work 12-hour shifts but get paid for eight hours. They were insourced on 1 July 2018 by former mayor Herman Mashaba.

One of the officers under Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), Vusimuzi Nkala, told Daily Sun it's incorrect that they get paid by scale of general workers.

“Since we were insourced in 2018, we were not graded. We are working as general workers. The workers keep crying for five years even today,” he said.

Vusimuzi said they felt neglected and city leaders in their department were failing them.

“That's why we've taken a decision to remove some of our leaders because they're undermining us. We asked them to be part of our meeting to talk about our issues and one of them told us they were in a more important meeting,” he said.

He said they submitted a memorandum in March 2022, but it was never responded to. Vusimuzi said they have now petitioned more than 300 signatures and aim to march to the city manager next week.

“There are 2 600 security officers under JMPD, and we will march to the city manager and demand the removal of those managers exploiting and undermining us. All officers from all four shifts must sign that petition but so far, we've managed to get 300 signatures,” he said.

He said their guard rooms are also not in a good condition.

“Our guard rooms are in a bad state. When it's raining the roofs leak and our leaders have not come to monitor all this," he said.

City of Joburg spokesman Nthatis Modingoane said they were unable to comment because they weren't privy to the matter.

“We will be able to comment once we have more information on this matter. In the meantime, we will be investigating this matter,” he said.

On Wednesday, 28 February and Thursday, 29 February, the group gathered at Library Gardens in the Joburg CBD to plan the date of the march.
