THE City of Cape Town is warning residents about an Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) job scam circulating on social media and promising a handsome salary.
The advert states the programme is looking for 10 000 unemployed people with no criminal record to apply. The potential recruits are promised between R7 000 to R20 000 stipend if they get the job.
City of Cape Town MMC for Urban Waste Management, Grant Twigg said the link to the job advert is fake as scammers prey on unsuspecting jobless people.
"We appeal to jobseekers to please be extra vigilant. It is very important to note that the city would never ask community members to pay for job opportunities or to pay to apply for a job,” said Twigg.
He said the link has since been shutdown, but some jobseekers are still falling victim to similar tricks. He said residents must be able to distinguish the difference between a real job and a fake one.

Twigg said some of the aspects that shows that the job is a scam includes when a jobseeker receives a job offer right away.
He said it should considered as a red flag when the pay is suspiciously high, the job requirements and description are vague and the company requires payment from a jobseeker to be eligible for consideration.
Twigg also said jobseekers must be suspicious when a job offer promises them to get wealthy fast and when the communication appears unprofessional with spelling and grammar errors.
Jobseekers must also be suspicious when the contact information for the employer or company is missing and a company requests confidential information before hiring.
Above all, the City of Cape Town said EPWP jobs are applied at government offices.
“If you would like to be considered for EPWP work opportunities, the only way to do this is to register on the jobseekers’ database at your local sub-council office. Please bring a copy of your CV, ID or a valid South African work permit. EPWP beneficiaries are randomly selected from this database,” said Twigg.
