PASTORS embarked on a prayer session on Wednesday, 13 December.

They were joined by traditional leaders, taxi associations, undertakers and officials from the Free State Department of Road Safety for a Christmas prayer to ask God to reduce road deaths and ensure compliance with road traffic rules.

The prayer was held at N5 and the R57 towards Harrismith outside Kestell in the Free State, as the province's day of prayer to also remember victims of road accidents.

The prayer session was held after two people were trapped in a car wreck and died in a two-vehicle collision on the N5 outside Harrismith on Sunday, 10 December.

The drivers of both vehicles suffered serious injuries and were both taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

The two occupants who were trapped in the vehicle were sadly pronounced dead by the emergency services. Both bodies were recovered from the wreckage. The names of the deceased and the driver cannot be released until relatives have been officially informed and the bodies have been identified to give the correct names and ages.

Reverend Matebesi Lakaje, who led the prayer, expressed his dissatisfaction over the road accidents in which many people lost their lives.

"The victims for us are our brothers, sisters, parents, children and aunties. We are here to ask God to stop the road accidents. We have lost people who were supposed to contribute to the growth of the deteriorating economy. We ask motorists to take a break whenever they feel tired to avoid unnecessary losses," he said.

The infamous N5 between Bethlehem and Harrismith has robbed the country of a well-known footballer, Richard Henyekane, who died in a horrific car accident in 2015.
