ZIKHONA Ngwalase (24) has been left with nothing but the clothes on her back.

This after her “jealous” boyfriend allegedly burnt her shack on Friday, 9 December.

Zikhona told Daily Sun her boyfriend called her asking where she was, but she told him she was at work. She said he had called again around 10pm, and she told him that she was still at work.

The man called around midnight and told Zikhona he was on his way to her house.

She told him she was not at home and she was going to sleep at her friend’s place.

“He got angry and told me that he was walking from Delft on foot to my place. I told him that he must not do that because I was not home with my keys, and he won’t be able to enter. He threatened that he was going to set my shack alight if he didn’t find me at my place. He told me that he was joking so I just relaxed and slept at a friend’s place,” said Zikhona.

To her shock, on Saturday morning she received several WhatsApp messages and missed call alerts. She saw many messages from people telling her that her three-roomed shack was just a heap of ashes.

“I ran home and found that indeed everything had been destroyed. Residents beat him up after the incident and he was taken to the hospital by cops. I still don’t understand why a person who claimed to love me had to destroy me like this,” she said.

A resident, Zethu Mandungwana (34), said the man allegedly set the shack alight at night and attempted to flee.

“One resident saw Zikhona’s shack was on fire and the boyfriend was trying to flee but he could not run properly because he was drunk. He woke up other residents to extinguish the fire and others caught the man and beat him. Residents were angry that the fire could have spread everywhere,” she said.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi confirmed the incident.

He said a case of arson was opened for investigation at Philippi East Police Station.
