THE summer holidays are over and it's back to the classroom for the pupils. 

It was a morning of nerves and excitement as the children entered the classroom for the first time in 2024 - some returning, others for the very first time.

Here's a colourful look in pictures at the start of the new school year:

According to the latest statistics in South Africa, 46% of 15-to 19-year-old's are currently enrolled in general upper secondary education and a further 32% are enrolled in lower secondary programmes.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane said that Kgatoentle Secondary School in Ga-Rankuwa is a fully resourced school and that its excellent academic performance is a prime example of the Gauteng province's vision to change the landscape of township schools.

The SNL24 team captured pupils on their way to school in the township, whether they were travelling with their parents, classmates or alone.

The first day of school brings with it very different experiences, from grade 1 children entering classrooms for the first time to matriculants who know this will be the last year of their high school experience.

As learning begins again in the classrooms, the day will be filled with laughter, reunions, tears and pride among pupils, teachers and families.
