THE Azanian People’s Organisation (Azapo) said those who are involved in vandalising their campaigning billboards are out to ban and silence the party’s voice.
This after one of the party’s billboards was vandalised in less than a day on Friday, 15 March in Gauteng.
The party said billboards of racist organisations were standing high without any attempt to vandalise them. They said this wouldn't deter them but would be an inspiration for them to work even harder.
Speaking to Daily Sun, party spokesman Jabu Rakwena said the damage may attempt to disrupt Azapo's election campaigns, but it will never disrupt the voters in deciding who they will vote for.
“On Friday, 15 March, we were alerted to a vandalism on one of our billboards that is situated on Queen Elizabeth Bridge in Braamfontein, and we immediately went there to establish the reports. It's not clear at this moment who is behind the vandalism.
“However, we suspect it's part of the intolerance that is demonstrated by political parties who want to establish a hegemony over certain areas and refuse to allow space for other parties to operate. We have already reported this matter to the Independent Electoral Commission and have also laid a charge of malicious damage with the police,” Rakwena said.

He said: “Our organisation is one of the three liberation movements that is well grounded throughout the country. We have a strong presence in most of the provinces throughout the country.
“We indeed are surprised that there is intolerance of black parties and yet not the same amount of intolerance is demonstrated towards white political parties.”
Rakwena further said the IEC hasn't as yet responded to the filed complaint and that as soon as they receive further information and leads from the police, the public will be updated.
Daily Sun contacted IEC for a comment but at the time of going to print, no feedback was received.
Gauteng police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed a case of malicious damage to property was opened at Joburg Police Station, and the matter was under investigation. Masondo said no arrests have been made yet.
