THE African Transformation Movement (ATM) has rejected Eskom's proposed electricity fee hike.
The cash strapped state-owned entity plans to increase electricity tariffs by an average of 15,09% per year over the next three years.
Eskom is gearing up to implement the price hike from 1 April 2024, with residential home power rates set to increase by a hefty 12,74%.
The party viewed this as a direct assault on economic stability and the welfare of the citizens of South Africa which they say is both unreasonable and unjustifiable.
“Such a substantial hike in electricity prices will undoubtedly burden the already struggling households and businesses, exacerbating the financial strain faced by many South Africans.

“The African Transformation Movement recognises the importance of ensuring the financial viability of Eskom and maintaining the stability of the national grid. However, we firmly believe that any solution must be equitable and considerate of the socio-economic realities facing ordinary citizens,” said ATM spokesman Zama Ntshona.
He said it is crucial to acknowledge that the proposed fee hike will affect the most vulnerable segments of society, including low-income households and small businesses.
Ntshona said many South Africans are already grappling with high unemployment rates, rising inflation, and the economic repercussions of the ongoing global pandemic.
“We urge Eskom to engage in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders, including consumer advocacy groups and civil society organizations, to find a more equitable and sustainable way forward,” he said.
He called on the relevant authorities, including the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, to intervene and ensure that any adjustments to electricity tariffs are fair, transparent, and in the best interests of all South Africans.
