Athletes boost kids' steps to success

ATHLETES from different clubs ended the year 2023 in fine style.

They participated in the half marathon (21km) on Sunday, 31 December, which was hosted by the Katlehong Athletics Club (KAC).

The event held near Somhlola Ground in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni was part of the Charity Club Run initiative to collect school shoes and raise funds which will be channeled toward helping needy children.

Some runners brought school shoes while others donated money.

The runners said they were happy to participate if would bring a difference to children.

Thuli Mbatha (50) of Katlehong Athletics Club said donating school shoes to the children will make a huge difference.

"There are parents and families who can't afford to buy school shoes for their children. Through this initiative, the children will benefit and be encouraged to go to school," said Thuli.

Thuli said the event helped her to prepare for the 2024 Comrades Marathon.

"I've run nine Comrades Marathon, and I'm looking forward to participating for the 10th in 2024," said Thuli.

Another runner, Ndumiso Moyo (42) from Team C 16, said the event is a good initiative to help those who are in need.

"The event is growing from strength to strength, and it's a great initiative to put a smile on the children who are less fortunate," said Ndumiso.

Mahlatse Moela from Team C16 the school drive is aimed at keeping children in school.

“If they do have shoes, they're encouraged to attend school. We believe in that initiative and as team C16, we support local clubs that re trying to make a change in our community.

“We're grateful that we are given legs to run it and to donate. We hope that next year it will grow from strength to strength so that we'll be able to give out uniforms and even Christmas hampers. We believe that working together we'll achieve more,” said Mahlatse.
