ATM bombings have rocked Thembisa in Ekurhuleni for the past few months.

Heavily armed thugs attacked yet another petrol station in the early hours of Thursday, 18 April.

In a brazen act that's left the kasi reeling, a gang of masked men unleashed their acts of terror on employees as they were attending to customers.

The armed suspects forced employees into a corner and a few minutes later, a loud explosion was heard.

Staff members were robbed of their cellphones.

Shots rang out and the suspects escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes.

No injuries were reported, and the petrol station has since been closed until further notice.

Ward 10 Councillor Pusetso Petlele said they were worried about the high crime rate in the area.

"Criminals target ATMs because they know there's not enough security. We need to bring back Community Patrolling Forums. Winter is coming and people will be vulnerable to crime," said Petlele.

Community members who live near the petrol station were surprised that the suspects would bomb the station that is not far from the police station.

"It's normal hearing bombs and gunshots here in Thembisa. We're woken up by explosions, and don't know whether to run or hide," he said.

District communication officer Captain Sekgobela said police are investigating a case of business robbery and ATM bombing. No arrest has been made. Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects, is asked to contact the nearest police station.
