A FAMILY from Mfuleni in Cape Town is angry with thugs who threw "teargas" in a rented room they tried to break into but failed.

According to a family member who spoke to Daily Sun, she heard noises of people trying to break into the room, which is opposite hers.

The person who rented the room was apparently in the Eastern Cape for the holidays.

The woman said the moment she heard the noises, she switched her light on and off to show the thugs that someone was around.

“They didn’t run away immediately. They spent about 10 minutes trying to break into the room, but the moment they left, my eyes became teary with a burning sensation, and I choked. It felt like teargas. After a few minutes, the room they were trying to break into was on fire,” said the woman.

The woman said the incident happened at about 2am. She said she screamed, and residents came out in their numbers and helped to put out the fire. Luckily, the tenant had left her spare key behind when she went to the Eastern Cape.

“She left her spare key with us, so we quickly opened the door and extinguished the fire, but we were struggling because of the strong teargas smell. Some residents came and helped us, but they were also overwhelmed by the teargas,” said the woman.

Neighbour Sandile Ndzekeni (53), who lives a few houses from the room that was broken into, said he was shocked by the smell of teargas.

“I've been to several protests where cops threw teargas at us. I know the smell of teargas. I was shocked to smell it in the house. We quickly extinguished the fire as it was still small,” he said.

Residents and the family believe that the thugs were angry that they couldn't into the room hence they burnt it and sprayed teargas at their victims.

Western Cape police spokesman Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the incident.

“Mfuleni police are investigating an arson case which was reported on 30 December 2023 in Ungqobe Street, extension 3, Mfuleni. No arrests have been made. The investigation into the matter continues,” said Twigg.
