GATVOL residents of Bramfischerville Phase 2 in Soweto demand the resignation of their ward councillor.

They accuse the councillor of failing to act when they need him to address the community's problems, such as service delivery issues.

Residents took to the streets on Thursday afternoon, 14 March, barricading the roads with stones and burning tyres.

Community member Thembinkosi Ngema told Daily Sun that they are having service delivery problems.

“We are here because we want to be served like other communities. We have a councillor who has done nothing for us since he was elected. When we call him for a meeting, he doesn’t turn up. Three days ago, we had problems with the electricity supply, and he never responded to our pleas," he said.

Thembinkosi said that as a community they need tarred roads, a clinic and a police station.

"We only have two months to the elections but how are we supposed to vote for people who don't care about service delivery?" he said.

Residents said they also don't have a police station in their area, adding that this is the reason for the high crime rate in the kasi.

"We've been living here for more than 24 years but we don't have a police station. We don't have tarred roads. Our clinic is in a bad state. We need a new one, we have had enough of our councillor. He must step down!" they said.

Other residents said because of the bad roads, ambulances cannot enter their kasi. So, when they call an ambulance, they have to take the patient to the main road and that is the only way to get help.

Speaking to Daily Sun, Councillor Goodman Bolani said he was aware of the residents' concerns.

"All these protests started on Monday when some residents had no electricity. I have been looking into the matter," he said.

He denied the allegation that he keeps disappearing.

"I've sent appropriate letters to the various departments to take care of the clinic, the police station and the tarred roads," he said.
