INVESTIGATIONS of the political killings have revealed that the most affected parties are the ANC, IFP and NFP.

Of the 52 murders cases of councillors, 31 ANC councillors were killed while 14 were from the IFP.

The NFP lost four of its councillors while the EFF and ACDP lost two.

This was revealed by the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, in Durban on Tuesday, 5 September.

Cele was giving an update on behalf of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on political killings, which consists of ministers of state security, defence, justice and correctional services.

The committee held its meeting in Durban on Tuesday, where it was presented with a detailed briefing on the work of the integrated Multi-disciplinary Task Team investigating political killings in KZN since 2018 to date.

Cele, who also chairs the committee, said 52 councillors had been shot dead since 2011 to date.

"Alarmingly, 103 officials working in municipalities as political office bearers and officials in political offices were killed," said the minister.

He said as the country approaches elections which are expected to be held in the first half of next year, the committee felt it necessary to provide an update on the latest developments in relation to investigations into political violence in KZN.

"The committee was briefed on the work of the police in dealing with violent attacks stemming from the areas of political intolerance and violence, elimination of competition and in some cases, pure greed," Cele said.

The minister said these incidents include targeted threats and attacks on councillors, other political players such as public officials and traditional leaders in KZN.

"Since 4 July 2018, the task team has so far investigated 321 cases, which is 63 cases more than the last update in February 2022," said Cele.

Cele said the figure includes 134 cases reported from 2011 to June 2018, before the task team started its work.

"The cases investigated by the team include 155 murder cases, 51 attempted murder cases, 77 intimidation cases, 12 conspiracies to commit murder, and 26 other ad hoc cases," he said.

The minister said so far, the work of the task team has led to the arrest of 348 suspects who have already been charged in 233 cases.

"Sixty-two suspects have already been convicted while 155 are going through the court processes. Seventeen arrested suspects have since died during court hearings," Cele said.
