AMABUTHO and Zulu maidens came in numbers to support King Misizulu as the case proceeded in the North Gauteng High Court in Tshwane on Monday, 16 October.

The appointment of King Misuzulu kaZwelithini as the king of the Zulu nation is opposed by the king's half-brother Prince Simakade and the late King Goodwill Zwelithini's half-brother Prince Mbonisi Zulu, who wants Prince Buzabazi to take over the throne.

The amabutho and maidens have vowed to remain outside the court to chant, sing and dance until the court case is concluded.

The brave amabutho and maidens stood in the rain since the morning, showing their love to the king. Amabutho said the weather could not stop them from show their support. Prince Simphiwe Zulu told amabutho to be hopeful and that victory was certain.

"This is the only chosen king, and there is no one else except him," he said.

Prince Vanana Zulu, a leader of amabutho, said they were supporting King Misuzulu, and neither rain nor heat would stop them.

"We are supporting the Zulu King. We want the judges to tell us that this is the only king. We want all the Zulu people to know that this is the only king," he said. He said the case was disturbing the king in doing his job.

Chief Fangilazi Mhlongo said coming to court was a waste of time, adding that the battle was hurting the royal family.

"Misuzulu kaZwelithini is a chosen king and all the cultural customs have been done. Our king is in possession of a certificate which he was given by the government to show that he is the king," he said.

The court case resumes just after a month after the passing of Prime Minister Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who had backed Misuzulu's appointment as King.

Prince Simakade is arguing that President Cyril Ramaphosa had no right to choose who should be king. He wants the court to set aside the kingship certificate he issued.
