THE Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has apologised to travellers for the luggage delayed out of the OR Tambo International Airport between Friday,22 December and Saturday, 23 December.
This comes after thousands of travellers arrived at their destinations without their luggage as there was some operational malfunctions at the airport.
ACSA spokeswoman Tshililo Manenzhe said due to a malfunction in the baggage sortation system in the domestic terminal, several bags could not be loaded onto the scheduled departing flights. She said this thereby resulted in passengers not receiving their luggage when they arrived at their destination airport.

She said the bags have had to be sent on later flights with airlines arranging to get these bags delivered to passengers, or passengers electing to return to the airport to collect their bags when they eventually do arrive.
“Technicians are working tirelessly to resolve this issue and as of the evening of 23rd December, the system has been stabilised but further investigations and root cause analysis are in progress to implement a permanent fix.
“In response to the situation, ACSA working in conjunction with airlines and ground handling companies had to implement a manual contingency process and ACSA will also be working with and supporting airlines to ensure that arrangements are made for bags to be reconciled with its owners,” she said.
She further advised travellers to arrive early at the airport to allow for sufficient time for passenger processing.
She said passengers are also requested to contact their airlines lost property office for all baggage enquiries.
