THE burning, looting, and destroying of trucks seem to be a new national sport in Mzansi.

Just after the Minister of Police Bheki Cele addressed the media on Wednesday, 12 July, about the torching of trucks across provinces, a truck was torched by protestors on the N12 between Eldorado Park and Lenasia in Joburg.

While addressing the media, Cele said whether it is economic sabotage, labour or service delivery-related disputes, police are closing in on those who choose to use violence and intimidation for whatever motive.

“Intelligence suggests that attacks on trucks may be business related, and we know that these are not just random acts of criminality. Evidence before us points to organised coordinated, and sophisticated operations that seek to undermine and sabotage the state,” he said.

JMPD spokesman Xolani Fihla told Daily Sun that police are closely monitoring the N12 between the Golden Highway and Eldorado Park and Klipspruit Valley Road next to Slovo informal settlements, which have been blocked due to traffic near the pedestrian bridge, and this is due to a suspected protest.

“A truck was torched at the same location. It was extinguished. The cause of the protest is not yet known because, upon police arrival at the scene, the protestors left without explaining the reason for the protest,” said Fihla.

He added that there are no reported injuries.

“The truck is obstructing traffic and causing delays on the N12 towards Lenasia and Protea Glen. Officers have removed the burning tyres and will continue to monitor the area for any further disturbances,” he said.
