RESIDENTS of Langa in Cape Town were left shocked after a man was shot and killed in broad daylight on Saturday, 13 January.

Onlookers said the man was pushed out of a taxi and shot in the head before the killers drove off in the Totoya Quantum at high speed.

The incident happened on Mafunga Street next to St John’s Church. A resident who lives at one of the flats said she saw the incident through her window.

“At first, I thought the man was being kicked out of the taxi because he didn’t pay or something, but I was shocked the moment I saw a gun. Two men pushed him to the ground before shooting him as he was begging for his life. He didn’t even attempt to run. It appears he was begging for his life,” she said.

People from the area said they couldn’t identify the deceased, and they believe he was kidnapped from somewhere outside Langa and killed in their kasi.

A community leader in the area, Neliswa Sikhutshwa (40), said it was wrong for thugs to kill people in their kasi.

“Langa is not a slaughtering ground for thugs. Why choose Langa as a place to kill someone? Of all the places, why Langa? Our children are exposed to dead bodies, and it is not good for them,” said Sikhutshwa.

Police spokesman Captain Frederick Van Wyk confirmed the incident.

“Langa police registered a murder following a shooting incident on Saturday at about 13.15pm in the street in front of a premises in Mafunga Street, Langa. According to reports, SAPS members attended the complainant at the mentioned address and found one unknown male lying in the road on his back with a gunshot wound to the head. The motive and suspects are currently unknown,” said Van Wyk.

Van Wyk urged anyone with information about this incident to contact CrimeStop on 08600 10111.
