THE Joburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) cops arrested seven undocumented people who had been working at an illegal potato chips manufacturer in Marlboro, Sandton.

The arrest happened on Friday, 24 November, and the suspects have since been detained at the Bramley Police Station.

However, JMPD spokesman Xolani Fihla confirmed that the owner of the business is still at large.

According to Fihla, officials were led to the manufacturers by the suspects who had been bust during a routine stop and search.

This as they were found transporting packages of potato chips in unauthorised boxes.

"On Friday, 24 November, while conducting a routine stop and search at Zinna Drive in Marlboro, JMPD officials stopped a white panel van with two male occupants. The officers searched and found boxes in the vehicle," said Fihla.

"After close examination, the officers found that the address on the packages of potato chips found in the boxes didn't correspond with the manufacturer's address, and they did not have a SABS mark of approval.

"The officers escorted the male occupants of the panel van to the manufacturer's address in Marlboro."

He said upon arrival at the address, environmental health inspectors were called to the scene, and it was discovered that the owner didn't have a manufacturer certificate and the relevant documents for operating the business.

Home Affairs immigration was also called to the scene, and they verified that seven employees at the business were undocumented foreigners. As a result, all seven undocumented persons were arrested, Fihla said.
