IN an operation at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) in Gauteng, the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) team apprehended a 60-year-old woman, uncovering a significant drug smuggling attempt.
The 60-year-old suspect found herself in the grasp of the law on Sunday, 5 November 2023.
This senior citizen, who didn't look suspicious, was at the centre of an intelligence-driven operation conducted by the crime intelligence gathering (CIG) Head Office.

According to Colonel Katlego Mogale of the Hawks said: “The passenger was located at the smoking lounge while her baggage was intercepted at the boarding gate. Members of the Germiston serious organised crime investigation (soci) acted upon the information provided by CIG, which indicated that a suspected drug mule was en-route to board a flight at ORTIA.
Despite the suspect having already checked in, the dedicated team swung into action to nab the gogo. Eight blocks of compressed dagga, each weighing a over 1kg each were discovered cleverly concealed between the senior suspect's clothing. The drugs were both an estimated R400 000.
“Her cellphone and other belongs were confiscated for further investigation,” said Mogale.
“The senior suspect now faces serious legal consequences for her alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade. On Tuesday, November 7, 2023, she is due to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates Court, where she will be formally charged with dealing in illegal drugs.” She said
