RESIDENTS of Alexandra, north of Joburg, said they’re enjoying the fruits of democracy as they expressed excitement about celebrating 30 years of freedom.

Speaking to Daily Sun, they recollected about the day they cast their votes for the first time, a moment filled with joy and hope.

Residents described that day as the dawn of a new era in their lives, transitioning from oppression and mistreatment of the apartheid government to freedom.

They acknowledged challenges of the transition and appreciated efforts made on their behalf.

Gogo Esther Molapo (87) praised government's efforts, saying: "The government has fulfilled its promises, yes, some of the things were not done, but the houses we needed, we've received them. There's been change since we voted for the first time, 30 years ago."

Lydia Mthembu fondly remembered 27 April 1994 as the happiest day of her life, noting significant and positive changes since then.

"Our children receive grants, and the elderly have seen an increase in their grant money, receiving it monthly instead of quarterly," Lydia said.

She was realistic about government's capacity to deliver on all its promises.

"When they said they would build houses for us, I knew it wouldn't be possible for it to be done all at once. I live in a one-room house but remain hopeful for my own home one day," she shared.

Khensani Mabhunda (49) observed the transformation in the living conditions, including access to electricity and free education.

"We've moved from using candles, which put our lives at risk, to having power that enables us to do so much more," Khensani said.

She also pointed out the need for improvement in the allocation of houses, attributing issues to mismanagement.

"If government could address this, it would make a significant difference," she added.
