RESIDENTS of Bloemfontein in the Free State have been urged to keep warm and avoid unnecessary driving due to extremely cold weather. 

The weather has been cloudy and with cold conditions over the central and eastern parts of the province. There has also been isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers with disruptive snowfall expected until Wednesday, 1 November. 

The senior weather forecaster, Julius Mahlangu, told Daily Sun the province is experiencing a cold front, which he described as a cold-core low pressure system, which is associated with flooding, snowfall and cold conditions.

"Disruptive snowfall extreme is dictating Eastern Free State at the present moment. The current system is cut-off low. It's associated with floating, snow as well as extremely cold weather conditions. It can be experienced throughout the year," he said 

Mhlangu called on residents to keep warm, shelter the crops, animals, drive consciously due to slippery roads and stay indoors. The cold front weather is expected to continue unchanged until Wednesday, 1 November.

The large amount of snow was seen in many towns in the province where the schools were forced to release pupils early except matriculants who commenced their final examinations.
