THE 2023 matric top achievers are set to start a new chapter.

The class is now set to start another journey of being students at different universities.

On Friday, 26 January, the pupils who were part of Karabo Centre in Vosloorus were honoured with bursaries, trophies, money and tablets.

The event was held at J Dumani Hall in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni.

The centre provides Saturday classes to help pupils from grades 10 to 12 in subjects such as Maths, Accounting, Life Science and Physical Science.

Alemu Mekuria, Ndumiso Ntsimbini, Siyabonga Malindisa, Njabulo Mabena, and Tshesane Kgatledi stood out as the top achievers in Maths and Science.

Alemu, 18, from Brakpan, expressed excitement about his achievements and plans to pursue Mechanical Engineering at Pretoria University.

He credited his success to supportive parents who view education as a pathway to success.

“My parents are big ambassadors of education they believe that success comes through education and that really also was able to motivate me through my studies as well,” said Alemu.

He said he’s hoped to get a bursary to study further.

“One of my sisters is in university and our parents won’t afford to pay for our tertiary fees. My family right now is not in the right financial position. They made the decision to take out my sister from university to study from home so that they'll be able to at least fund my tertiary fees,” said Alemu.

Another pupil, Ndumiso Ntsimbini, thanked the Karabo Centre for helping the pupils in Vosloorus.

“The centre caters for pupils from government and model schools and makes sure we excel. I got four destinations and am going to study Civil Engineering at the University of Cape Town,” he said.

Tazvarwa Chivaviro, head of the Karabo Centre's math department, emphasised the importance of preparing students for the challenges they may face in university life

“Some of them are going for varsity and they're going to be alone for the first time without no parents without no advice,” he said.
