  • Over 26 pupils were allegedly struck by lightning during Akanani Junior Primary School lessons.
  • The incident happened on Monday, 15 May, at Nwamitwa, in the Greater Tzaneen region in Limpopo, as the pupils were preparing to start their studies.
  • Emergency assistance was requested, and the victims were taken to a local medical facility for evaluation.
  • The deputy chairman of the School Governing Body (SGB) at Akanani, Jele Ngobeni, said the warning signs of lightning alerted them, but then it struck again for the second time, leaving the learners in great shock.
  • Limpopo health spokesman Neil Shikwambana said 28 people from the school, including a few staff members, were taken to hospital, treated and discharged.
