CULTURAL musician and instrumentalist Zawadi YaMungu will be taking fans on a musical journey from the past to the present.
The KZN artist, whose real name is Nkosingiphile Mpanza, is set to host an annual concert called The Past Meets the Future at The Playhouse Company in Durban on 22 September.
The purpose of the concert is to pass on the African sound from the old generation to the young generation. It will also feature a live six-piece band, as well as performances from other renowned cultural artists such as Dr Madala Kunene, Dumza Maswana, Dr Gcina Mhlophe and Kerolin Govender.
Zawadi described the concert as a “celebration of heritage month. It commemorates our culture and heritage through taking the audience on a journey of the past meeting the future through indigenous instruments, ijadu, amahubo and more”.

She said her style of music is inspired by Princess Magogo and Busi Mhlongo.
“The concert features indigenous music renditions of umakhweyana, ugubhu, acoustic guitar 7, penny whistle completed by vocals. This concert brings a wealth of professional cultural music experience with collaborations,” said Zawadi.
Zawadi is not new in the music industry. She has collaborated with various music legends such as Thandiswa Mazwai, Dr Madala Kunene, Nduduzo Makhathini and Dr Gcina Mhlophe.
Her recent collaboration with DJ Merlon is a mix of cultural music and house music, and it will be released early in September.
“I am excited about this concert because it will connect us with our culture. It will also remind us of our roots and identity as Africans. Therefore, I am looking forward to seeing our people gather with us on this day for a cultural awakening and connection through music, poetry and dance,” said Zawadi.
