THE state is ready to prosecute former Sizok'thola presenter Xolani Khumalo.

On Thursday, 11 April, Xolani appeared briefly in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court in Ekurhuleni and the case was postponed to 9 May.

State prosecutor Advocate Pheelo Vilakazi said the investigative officers have concluded their investigation and he has received the video from Moja Love.

Vilakazi said the matter will be transferred to the regional court.

Xolani is facing a charge of murder, robbery, and property damage after a suspected drug dealer, Robert "Kicks" Varrie (49), was allegedly assaulted in July 2023

Robert was declared dead after being interrogated during the filming of Sizok'thola in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni.

He was later dropped off at the Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Xolani, who is out on R20 000 bail, was wearing the Madiba-type shirt and arrived in court under heavy security guards.

Before court proceedings, one of Xolani's supporters approached him.

The supporter said: "My son, please pray and things will be okay."

Xolani responded and said: "Thank you, mama."

The woman then dashed out of the court before the SunTeam could get her name.

Xolani's lawyer, Advocate Prince Mafu told the media outside the court that his client was ready for trial.

“We believe the state has received the outstanding video footage and the matter is ready for trial. We're still waiting for the copies of the docket.

"Once we get the copies, I would then do a consultation with Xolani and at this stage, my client is presumed innocent until proven guilty," said Mafu.

The family of Robert said they still believe more people should be arrested.

Varrie’s sister, Carol Varrie left the court angry, saying they wished the matter could be taken to the high court.

Carol said Xolani wasn't alone when the incident happened.

"It has been months since the incident happened and until now, only Xolani has been arrested.

"The witness saw Xolani and his crew allegedly assaulting my brother and they even took him to the hospital where they left him dead," said Carol.
