The 34-year-old, who was born and raised in Atteridgeville, said: "The academy aims to give children and young people opportunities to grow their talents and be heard. There are many of them who have never had access to musical education and opportunities to learn music within a structured programme, alongside other young people."
He said so far, they have 47 students for this year and have trained a total of 587 students since the academy started in 2020.
"Our vision is to create a beautiful, inspiring place where children of all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds can come and play music - together, individually, or with teachers. It is a place to go after school and weekends," DJ Mapentane said.
"Young kids get a chance to play together in a range of bands and ensembles. We always stick to our mission and vision.
