Legendary kwaito musician Tzozo Zulu to host Umgababa New Year’s Picnic.
Legendary kwaito musician Tzozo Zulu to host Umgababa New Year’s Picnic.

AFTER a break of five years, the renowned Umgababa New Year’s Picnic is making a comeback.

The picnic, organised by kwaito legend Thokozani "Tzozo" Zulu and businessman Tate Mchunu, last happened in 2017 at Umgababa beach when it celebrated 10 years.

The break was due to the construction of a swimming pool at the usual venue, coupled with reported conflicts between the organisers.

However, Tzozo confirmed that bad blood between organisers has been resolved.

“Our differences were not about Umgababa New Year’s Picnic, but it was another event and we've ironed out all our differences.

“Tate is my brother and my homeboy. And we have listened to people who were asking us to bring back the picnic. I even want the tourists to visit our picnic and we are going to release the line-up soon,” he said.

Tate said if people work together there will always be conflict but that doesn’t mean the work must stop.

“We are back with Tzozo and the picnic is back because the building on the swimming pool has been finished and it is where we are doing our picnic. The venue will be a little bit smaller, but it will be able to host the picnic. People will still be gaining entry free just like before but only the VIPs will pay for entry,” he said.

In addition to the picnic, the organisers plan to use the event to raise awareness against crime through a sports-themed initiative at Umnini Sport Stadium on 16 December.

“We will use this event to give other musicians a chance to perform because not all the musicians will be booked to perform at Umgababa New Year’s Picnic,” he said.
