What is Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic, inherited disorder that primarily affects the respiratory and digestive systems.

  • Lung Problems: Thick mucus in the airways can obstruct airflow, making it difficult for individuals with CF to breathe.
  • Digestive Issues: The thick mucus can also block the ducts in the pancreas, leading to insufficient release of digestive enzymes.
  • Increased Salt in Sweat: People with CF have abnormally high levels of salt in their sweat, which is often used as a diagnostic test for the condition.
  • Recurrent Infections: Individuals with CF are prone to frequent lung infections, which can be challenging to treat and may require antibiotics and other therapies.
  • Respiratory Symptoms: Symptoms of CF can include chronic cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, and an increased susceptibility to respiratory infections.
