DJ SUMBODY’S death has sent shock waves across Mzansi

The musician and businessman was killed in a hail of bullets in Woodmead, Joburg, in the early hours of Sunday morning, 20 November.

Many stars and political leaders have expressed their shock over the murder of the amapiano DJ and producer, whose real name is Oupa John Sefoka, on social media.

Gauteng MEC of sport, arts, and culture Morakane Mosupyoe said DJ Sumbody will forever go down as an icon who not only produced music but was instrumental in developing new talent across the lengths and breadths of the province.

“DJ Sumbody was a renowned South African DJ, music artist, radio personality and entrepreneur. He started off his music journey at the then Top Studio (now known as Tshwane FM). He then went about in his journey to release hit songs such as Monate Mpolaye, featuring Cassper Nyovest and Thebe, and Ayepyep, featuring DJ Tira, Thebe, and Emza.

“He also has released music albums such as Larger Than House Volume 1 and 2. He is also behind the hit Suk’emabhozeni, which made waves throughout the South African music industry. Our prayers are with his family, friends, fans, and the entire industry at large,” she said.

The EFF sent they sent their condolences to the friends, family, and colleagues of DJ Sumbody, and pray that his last moments do not define our memory of him.

“He must be remembered as a trailblazer who took risks to elevate the South African music industry. His tragic passing, which is a result of what seems to be a drive-by shooting, is a confirmation of the boldness of criminals in South Africa. People are being murdered with little to no consequence and organised hits on civilians have become a norm under the incompetent and cowardly leadership of Bheki Cele. May his soul rest in perfect Peace,” the party said.

The ANC also joined the rest of the country in paying tribute to the fallen star.

“The news of Monate Mpolaye hitmaker’s passing has sent shock waves throughout South Africa and beyond. The performing arts industry is poorer without DJ Sumbody.

“We wish his family, friends, and fans strength during this difficult period. May they find solace in knowing that DJ Sumbody’s passing is a loss to the entire nation.

May his soul rest in peace,” they said.
