A TORNADO hit parts of Durban on Tuesday, 27 June, destroying properties and infrastructure and claiming four lives.
Videos of the tornado trended on social media, showing corrugated iron and other objects flying.
But the organisers of the annual Durban July said this would not interrupt the event, which will be held at Greyville Racecourse in Durban, KZN, on Saturday, 1 July.
Kurt Grunewald, senior track manager at the racecourse, said the track was not affected by the heavy rain on Tuesday and they are confident it will be ready for Saturday's event.
“At this point in time, we should be good to go. We can’t force anything and we are going to see what the weather throws at us. We anticipated some coastal rain on Tuesday of about 20-30mm, but we got much more than that. So, at this point and if everything stays like this, we are hopeful that everything will go according to plan on Saturday,” Grunewald said.

He said that the Durban weather is fine at the moment and the forecast after the storm towards Saturday looks better than Tuesday's weather.
“Hopefully, there will be no more rain and we should be in a good spot to be racing on Saturday,” he said.
Mkhushulwa Msimang from the South African Weather Service confirmed that Durban will have good weather on Saturday.
“People must relax. Durban weather will be fine and sunny on Saturday,” he said.
Meanwhile, KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs released their preliminary report for the Tuesday tornado, in which they confirmed that four people lost their lives while one person remains missing.
They said about 70 houses were completely destroyed in Durban and a further 110 homes were partially damaged.
