THE eThekwini Municipality has assured those who'll be attending the Hollywoodbets Durban July that they will be safe.

This after many people raised concerns about their safety after Mzansi's top rapper AKA was shot dead in Durban in February 2023.

AKA, whose real name was Kiernan Forbes, was shot dead on his way to a performance and that made people fear for their safety in Durban, including AKA's baby mama DJ Zinhle who recently withdrew her performance for the Durban July.

This year's popular iconic event, themed Out of this world, was officially launched on Wednesday, 21 June, at Oceans Mall in Durban, and it will be held at the Greyville racecourse.

EThekwini Municipality deputy chairwoman of the Economic Development and Planning Committee, councillor Phili Ndlovu, said that they would be prioritising the safety of the residents and visitors during the Durban July.

"Our law enforcement agencies will be deployed to all strategic areas during the Durban July to ensure the safety of all patrons and residents.

"About 00 Metro police officers will be deployed on the ground in the Greyville area," said Ndlovu.

She said they are excited and ready to host another instalment of Africa's biggest horse race, and they're confident it will be a successful event due to their proven record of hosting major events.

"Between 35 000 and 48 000 punters and fashionistas will descend on the city for this year's Hollywoodbets Durban July Experience.

"The Durban July weekend promises loads of entertainment, with several events lined up. Some exciting events linked to the Hollywoodbets Durban July Experience include the Fact Durban Rocks, Mother of all Parties, Any Given Sunday, and Durban July Township Experience," said Ndlovu.

Hollywoodbets brand and communication manager Devin Heffer said they are proud to be part of an event that will be a major driver for tourism and an economic boost for the city.

"Punters will be happy with the R20 million up for grabs on the day in the Hollywoodbets punters," Devin said.
