AFRICA’S top shayela horseracing and social event, Hollywoodbets Durban July (HDJ), will take place on Saturday, 1 July at the Greyville Racecourse.

This year’s theme is Out Of This World and the event will be happening three years after the Covid-19 restrictions.

More than 50 000 people are expected to attend. Celebrities and fashion designers will be part of this much-anticipated event.

The formal announcement was made on Monday, 17 April by the event organizers Gold Circle and Hollywoodbets. Ticket sales were also opened on Monday, 17 April.

HDJ spokesman Steve Marshall said: “The event promises an exciting mix of horseracing, live entertainment, and fashion competitions. A general access ticket provides front-row seats to the racing action from the grandstand and track-side lawns, live DJ performances, runway, as well as public fashion competitions.”

Food trucks, pop-up bars, and comfortable seating areas will be available to make the experience enjoyable for everyone.

“For those seeking five-star hospitality experiences, various marquees and venues such as EQUUS, Boomtown, Pegasus Lounge, One Stop, and the Durban View Room, among others, will be available,” said Steve.

“KZN design students are already drawing inspiration from the 2023 theme, Out Of This World, for the HDJ Young Designer Award competition presented by Durban Fashion Fair. Various public race day fashion competitions will also be held, and details will be available on the event website and official social media handles.”

This year's Hollywoodbets Durban July first entries will be announced on 19 April, with Cousin Casey, last year's EQUUS Champion 2-Year-Old Colt, established as the early ante-post favourite for the most coveted prize in South African Horseracing.
