Award-winning actress Nambitha Ben-Mazwi is over the moon to be starring in King Shaka.
The international film by USA productions, Showtime and CBS Studios tells the story of legendary Zulu king, Shaka Zulu. It is produced and directed by international creatives with both South African and international actors starring in it.
Nambitha is set to play Queen Bhibhi alongside Charles Babalola, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje , Mustafa Shakir, Aissa Maiga, Tony Kgoroge, Sindi Dlathu, Thapelo Mokoena, Terry Pheto and more actors.
The 34-year-old actress from Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, spoke to SunBuzz about the show.
“I was actually up for another role, the leading role. I started my audition process last year and got quite far in the process. I was then flown to LA (Los Angeles) for the final round. When I got there, I got to read with the lead actor, Charles Babalola, who plays Shaka. Long story short, I am now Queen Bhibhi,” she said.

Nambitha said this story has been in the works for a while and she’s glad it’s finally happening.
“People aren’t aware of the work and emotions that go behind this. Some actors had started their auditioning process in 2021. This has been a big project for Showtime and CBS. They’ve been in development for years. This is a big thing for USA, but it’s also a big thing for us because it’s time our stories are told. And I’m glad we get to tell our stories ourselves,” she said.
Speaking about her character, the actress said she loved playing her.

Bhibhi was the great wife of Shaka’s father, Senzangakhona.
“What I love about Bhibhi is that she’s relatable with regards to being an overlooked wife. Her husband, Senzangakhona has a child with Nandi and she gives birth to Shaka, imagine how Bhibhi felt. Imagine having to live with your husband’s mistress and son. She had to make room for this woman because they never got married.
“Her son, Sigujana, was supposed to take the throne but Shaka took it instead.
“Bhibhi and her son hate Shaka and Nandi and that’s why she’s relatable. She’s hurt. There’s a great story to tell,” said the actress.
She also just made a big career move. She recently signed with LA-based agency, Range Media Partners. “They recently signed Halle Berry as well. I’m excited about that move because it means more international doors will be opening.”
