THE sister of a Shaka Ilembe actress and her boyfriend have applied for bail.
Nomzamo Mbatha's sister Wendy Mbatha (40), a well-known socialite and businesswoman, appeared in the Pinetown Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 20 February with her boyfriend Senzo Cele (34).
The pair is facing charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
They were both arrested on 18 February for allegedly beating up a pregnant woman in a mall in Durban on Thursday, 15 February.
Wendy wore a green doek, a floral jacket and pants. Her eyes were a bit red while her boyfriend Senzo wore a jacket with jeans. They both looked tired.
The courtroom wasn't full although there were only family members who came to support the couple. The state didn't oppose bail for the suspects.
State prosecutor Olwethu Mdladlamba said both the suspects' addresses have been confirmed by the investigating officer.
"What is outstanding now is a J88 from the complainant and video footage," she said.
Their lawyer, Advocate Vusi Khathi applied for bail for the couple.
"Cele is self-employed. He is a loan shark and sells skin products. He is a father. He has no pending case against him. He has no objection to any bail condition," he said.
He said Cele intends to plead not guilty. Accused two, Wendy, is a mother of a school-going child.
"She has no pending case or previous conviction. She is self-employed and owns her company. She is prepared to adhere to the bail conditions," he said.

He said she also intends to plead not guilty.
Khathi also stated that the police arrested them in order to investigate the matter because they didn't have a J88 form and the video as well.
However, Magistrate Nompumelelo Ndlovu granted the couple R1 500 bail each person.
Ndlovu postponed the matter to 29 April for further investigations.
Wendy and Cele were arrested on Sunday, 18 February after a video circulated on social media where Cele was allegedly seen beating up a woman at a mall in Durban.
The video sparked outrage as social media users expressed shock at how a man can beat up a woman in public. They were then both arrested in KwaMashu.
