THE KZN African Film Festival started with a bang.

It opened its 20th festival with a film about corruption, featuring famous actors.

Legendary actress Thembi Mtshali-Jones, Uzalo actress Noxolo Mathula, and Sibongile & The Dlaminis actor Siyabonga Shibe star in the film titled Blind Eye. The film was screened during the opening of the festival on Tuesday night, 12 December.

The six-day film festival takes place at KCAP in KwaMashu and aims to showcase films and educate aspiring filmmakers through workshops and masterclasses.

Thembi, who played a corrupt gogo on Imbewu: The Seed and also plays a corrupt gogo in Blind Eye, said it was nice to be in the film. But she said she's now tired of playing a corrupt gogo.

"Because we are storytellers, we're influenced by the stories we see. And as actors, these things have motivated us to tell our stories about our political and social issues before 1994," she said.

"We see social issues that affect us, and we see that it's important for us to tell those stories. We see these stories on TV and we can’t turn a blind eye. We have to tell these stories, and we know the corrupt people," Thembi said.

Noxolo said her role in the film was challenging because she's always the loud girl but in Blind Eye, she's a quiet woman.

"The film was shot three years ago, and it hurt me to watch it now because I was acting with my personal handbag and that bag was stolen at home," said Noxolo.

"I'm glad that KCAP is giving aspiring filmmakers a chance because I'm also a product of KCAP. I started attending KCAP acting classes when I was 14 and I'm happy that the centre has produced top stars," she said.

Director Menga Nhlanathu said the aim of the film was to open the eyes of the government and residents to the corruption that exists.

"The government should protect the auditor-general who investigate corruption in government institutions, especially women. Residents should also know where their money is being stolen for service delivery," he said.
