SINGER Mpumi hasn’t been releasing music in a while.
This isn’t because she doesn’t have any music to release but because she doesn’t have support.
The singer, whose real name's Nompumelelo Mzobe, said being an independent artist isn’t easy.
The 39-year-old from Ndwendwe in KZN said one gets many challenges from the journey and without a team to help, it becomes a problem.
“From the journey, you encounter stumbling blocks. Change of management and all those things affect you, especially if you are alone and everything depends on your pocket to move around and get things done,” Mpumi said.
She said when one is an independent artist, they don’t have resources.
The musician said working alone takes all the energy and money.

“You don’t have a big team like big companies like Universal and Ambitious or your Kalawas," she said.
“You are the one who must make sure that your music is on radio, organise promotions and more."
The Somandla hitmaker said she's now up on her feet.
Mpumi said she has worked on an album called Abantu, coming out in December.
“I named my album Abantu because it's about the reflection I see in my society. I try and make their experiences known or validated,” she said.
“I feel like my music must reflect the people I write for. I call it Abantu because it isn’t just about me. It’s about the hope, ambitions, failures, hurt, and prayers of my people."
