AFRO-SOUL and pop singer and songwriter Yolanda “Yallunder” Nyembezi has opened up how social media carved out her path in music.
Yallunder, who broke into the scene through posting videos of herself singing covers, became a recording artist in 2018.
The classically trained vocalist recently released her single Emaphupheni Am’. It explores the story of two lovers whose relationship ended because of pride.
The singer from Bizana, Eastern Cape, to Daily Sun: “I was introduced to music through church and school. I studied opera at the Tshwane University of Technology.
“I then started doing covers and posting them online – on Facebook.”

She shared that growing up, she would listen to a wide range of music, mostly gospel and soul, and then went for vocal training.
And, her degree often influenced her creative process.
“Before getting into studio, I create my own composition. I do not have to wait for the producer to send me a beat that I can write on. This allows me to be more expressive,” she said.
Yallunder’s first performance was at Black Coffee’s show at the Ticketpro Dome, working with Sjava. And the response was positive as that was the highlight of her career.
Advising up-and-coming artists on using social media, she said: “As long as people hear your voice! Now, you can even post your videos on TikTok.”
She said she had worked on a lot of music and was still deciding on whether to release an EP or album.
