African Dream hit-maker and president of the Trade Union for Musicians Of South Africa, Vicky Sampson thanked them for honouring her.

“This has been such a surprise for me and a blessing. I think I confided in Penny briefly about how tough it’s been to just find inspiration and hope everyday. Being the president for Tumsa for the past five years has been hard because we’ve been working voluntarily, myself and the general secretary, Gabi Le Roux,” she said.

“Just as an artist, some days have been hard. You forget that you’re actually a performer. All I want to do some days is just sing, I want to get on a stage to perform and inspire, but I have to continue the battle until all of us, this entire country, not just economically, but culturally and creatively, we are free to be proudly South African,” she said.

Mercy Phakela, who set the stage on fire with her dance moves after receiving her plaque, challenged Mayor Phalatse to change things and be there for musicians.

“Mntanam, as the mayor, our city is ugly. There are places we could walk around in heels with, now you can’t anymore. Please fix such things, use the arts fraternity to bring change,” she said.

The queen of maskandi Dr Buselaphi Gxowa accepted two plaques, one for herself and one for female maskandi group Imithente.

“Thank you for everything you are doing, phambili Basadi, phambili. As a maskandi musician, I’m here to say, thank you to the queen of the Basadi in Music awards,” she said.
