SKEEM Saam actress Dieketseng Mnisi doesn't believe in the concept of black tax.
Her character on the SABC1 show, Skeem Saam, has been demanding a double-storey house from her son Kwaito (played by Clement Maosa) for years now. And the son cannot afford to build the house but is trying to.
The storyline has people on social media saying the character is burdening her son. They have accused her of taxing him.
Black tax is a South African term where young, black people are obliged to financially support their families, sometimes even when they are struggling financially.
However, Dieketseng (62) doesn’t believe it’s taxing. She said she’s on the same side as MaNtuli.

“When you’re a mum, you must put your foot down when it comes to your children because if your house is small and you allow your child to get married, where is the makoti going to sleep?
“Zamokuhle (Kwaito) shares a room with Clement, and I share a room with Pretty, where will makoti sleep? That’s why she wants a double-storey house. Through that, she is helping her child grow. If she doesn’t do this, then he won’t,” she said.
Dieketseng said she was raised differently, which is why she doesn’t understand the concept.
“I understand that people say black tax is painful, but for me it's not. This is just a mother raising her child to be a responsible adult. Black tax is a theory that young people use and I understand what they think it is.
“But for me, as a woman who was raised in a traditional way, I know this is the way you raise your kids. I know my kids will grow up well. Just like Kwaito will grow up and be a good Seakamela man,” she said.
