Sikelelwa Qwazi is ready to release her new single about hope, that has evolved over the years.

Sikelelwa Qwazi, who was the third runner-up on The Voice SA season 3, cannot wait for her fans to listen to her new single titled Bekezela.

Also known as Siki Jo-An, the singer and songwriter from Kwazakhele, Gqeberha, said the single would be released on Saturday, 20 August. The song, produced by Mojalefa “Mjakes” Thebe, is a fusion of Afro-pop and soul.

She said she wanted people to hear the message of the song, which is about hope, and dedicated to her loved ones and the nation to encourage them not to lose hope.

“I am excited about the release of Bekezela. I poured my heart and soul into this song. I am fortunate to have worked with a team that believed in the song and what it means to me,” she said.

She said writing Bekezela didn’t take her long because she was telling her story and manifesting a better future for herself.

“I finished writing within a day. I composed it by playing chords on my guitar, followed by the lyrics.

“I wrote it when I was in university and things seemed to not be going well. I was struggling to fit in and my mum could only afford to send me R200 monthly,” she said.

Siki Jo-An said she was overwhelmed and even wanted to give up on her studies.

“Then in a long phone call with a friend, I expressed how emotionally exhausted I was. The friend comforted me by saying ‘bekezela’, meaning hang in there.

“Those words stuck in my head. I hope South Africa will enjoy this tune and my sound.”

She said the song had developed over the years as she had performed it on different stages. Siki Jo-An is planning to release a project soon and has already recorded four songs.
