RISING TikTok star ChubbyCheeks is enjoying her newly found fame.

Her song, Kuyabongwa, is one of the biggest tracks on social media, especially TikTok.

The musician, whose real name is Mbali Buthelezi (18) from the Vaal in Gauteng, spoke to Daily Sun about her song, growing a fan base and her journey in music.

"I'm beyond grateful for everyone's love and support. This achievement wouldn't have been possible without my incredible team, my family, my friends, and most importantly, my fans. Thank you to everyone for believing in me,” she said.

Speaking about her song, she said she was just making a cover of a track and it blew up.

“The chorus of Kuyabongwa is a song that is usually sung in traditional ceremonies. So, I did a cover of the song and posted it on TikTok, and people really loved it. I then decided to make it a whole song,” she said.

ChubbyCheeks said the song has taught her to be grateful.

“Because the song is such a deep song, I had to get myself into the right space to be able to write verses that will go with the song. I wrote it in a way that people would really understand that in life, they should be grateful for every little thing they have, which is what the chorus said.

“For me, it really taught me that whatever happens in my life, it’s God’s doing, so I should be grateful for whatever happens. When I started, I didn’t even think it would blow up this much,” she said.

ChubbyCheeks is in matric and said she's preparing for her final exams.

“I'm only focusing on my studies right now because it’s almost exam time. I only focus on music during the school holidays and that's when I do gigs.

“Matric is really tricky and it requires one to study. So, I'm really focusing even though it’s getting hard because of exams. But I’m ready for them. I’ll also release new music once I’m done with my exams,” she said.
