Real TV star Thobekile Mdlalose said she wants people to learn tolerance and acceptance of others’ differences.

REAL Housewives of Johannesburg star Thobekile Mdlalose is on a mission to demystify African spirituality in Mzansi schools.

Thobekile, who has been practising as a sangoma for more than 10 years, wants to change the myth that African spirituality is ungodly.

She started visiting schools to demystify African spirituality and started at Northlands Girls School in Durban on Friday, 26 January.

Thobekile, originally from KZN but based in Joburg, said she hopes to help demystify African spirituality, especially in schools and education institutions where some pupils find themselves embarking on a spiritual journey.

She told Daily Sun the aim is to educate pupils on the gift of healing, how to treat those with a calling and to remove the stigma of those with the gift of healing.

“People view ubungoma and African spirituality as demonic. That you should not tell others about your gift, or they won’t accept you. That you are satanic is absolutely not true.

“It’s a gift that brings light and prosperity. The talk is to preach tolerance and acceptance of other differences,” she said.

Thobekile said her idea was motivated by seeing many young people who have a gift being discriminated and others even committing suicide because they were teased and made fun of by their peers.

She said she got a warm welcome on her first school visit to Northlands Girls School.

“The pupils were kind and very interested. Young people are a lot more open-minded these days and I’ve learned about diversity. They inspired me to want to do more.

“I will be making other visits to more schools. We are in the planning phase. It's a good thing to start the year off on a good note,” she said.

She said that she wants people to learn tolerance and acceptance of others’ differences.

“We live in a very diverse country and continent. African spirituality and ubungoma are not taboo. People are finding healing by dealing with generational curses and breaking curses.

“Before people were scared to accept their gift, but now even a businessman, politician, or singer can be gifted,” she said.
