POET Zamokuhle Gwala is popularly known as Zamo Cofi.
But his clan name has been misspelled and it is now difficult for him to correct it.
Cofi, who is featured on Mduduzi Ncube's song Langa Linye, revealed that he wanted to be known as Zamo Cofu, because Cofu is his clan praise name.
But the 27-year-old poet from Inanda, north of Durban, said his praise name was misspelled when he took part in a poetry session at Durban University of Technology (DUT) in 2016.
“I wanted to be called by my clan praise name. But when I registered to participate at DUT, the person who registered me misspelled my clan praise name.

“I delivered my best during that show and poetry lovers loved what I did. I became popular as Cofi and it was difficult to make a correction that I’m actually Cofu because the Gwala clan praise name is Cofu. I thought if I change it people will think it's someone else,” he said.
Cofi started his poetry career in 2011 when he was still at high school and got his breakthrough in 2016.
“Many people think that I studied at DUT, but I didn't. DUT opened gates for us as poets to showcase our talents.
“I used to attend DUT sessions and shared the stage with other poets and musicians such as Busiswa Gqulu and Nasty C,” he said.
He said attending the DUT poetry sessions helped to develop his poetry skills.
Cofi said that he has successfully hosted his one-man shows in Durban and Joburg.
